'Mentor' defined

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines
a 'mentor' as "a trusted counselor or guide."

A mentor is an individual, usually older — always more experienced — who helps and guides another individual (the protégé) entirely for his/her benefit — not for personal gain.

The mentor listens, asks questions, gives feedback, provides another perspective to a situation, challenges, validates and redirects thinking, helps uncover possibilities, brainstorms ideas, and facilitates making choices and decisions.

A Mentor's intention is clearly to support the protégé; specifically:

* to be there for the protégé (the person being mentored), who needs support, wants to talk, think aloud, share ideas and plans with someone who has no axe to grind;

* to help the protégé to search within for answers; and

* to inculcate independence and self-assurance to build the momentum to take off in the right direction.

Goal is to bolster protégé's personal effectiveness — empowered to get unstuck and move on, focus on solutions, get alignment on purpose, and improve outcomes—where the protégé maintains personal freedom and relies on his/her own expertise and resources.

The Mentor is a CATALYST in clients' endeavor. Mentoring is about the protégé; it's not about the mentor.

Mentor-Protégé Relationship — is self-less and purposeful.

The Mentor — having business and life experience, and having gained wisdom by reflecting upon realities as they emerge — can help you in different ways, such as:

  • be available to youin person, by telephone, or via email when you most need that support;
  • be objective, and respect your individuality listen to you without judgment, respect your space, not step on your toes but pave a way for you to move along and make progress;
  • brainstorm possibilities, solutions and outcomes;
  • help you identify your priorities while being focused on your key outcomes so you can balance important with urgent;
  • discuss strategies and actions provide candid feedback and offer perspectives help you identify gaps, blind spots and potential pitfalls, and make essential changes;
  • help you uncover and develop new opportunities;
  • help you unleash your full potential, and
  • make a difference.
The Mentor is sincerely interested in your success, and will do his/her best to serve your interest.

The Protégé — a person who has real-life tasks, opportunities, commitments and challenges, who is accountable for results, and wants guidance, direction and support of a mentor.
